Cowboys Player Reveals Departing Coach May Trade for Him This Offseason
The Dallas Cowboys have turned their attention over to the offseason. After deciding not to bring Mike McCarthy back, the Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer to be their 10th head coach in team history.
The turnover among the coaching staff continued to happen. John Fassel left Dallas to take the Tennessee Titans' special team coordinator role for the 2025 season. He was with the Cowboys from 2020-2024 but will be elsewhere.
After taking the job with Tennessee, Fassell called all of his guys to inform them of his decision. Kicker Brandon Aubrey was among those players and revealed that the 51-year-old said he's going to attempt to trade for Aubrey.
Cowboys News: John Fassel Expresses He Wants to Trade for Brandon Aubrey
Aubrey was a guest on the TheDumbZone podcast hosted by Dan McDowell and Jake Kemp. During his appearance, Aubrey said, "Before signing his contract, he just calls all of his guys and says it's not about you guys. It's whatever and describes his decision-making process and he told me he's going to try and trade for me. I don't know if that's out of any sort of reality or whatnot but you know he's a great dude and we're going to miss him."
Aubrey signed with the Cowboys before the 2023 season and has quickly emerged as one of the best kickers in the NFL. Over 34 career games, the 29-year-old has gone 76-of-85 (89.4%) on field goal attempts and 79-of-82 (96.3%) on extra point kicks.
The Notre Dame product has one of the strongest legs in the league and gives the Cowboys a massive advantage. From 40-49 yards away, Aubrey is 18-of-20. Meanwhile, from 50-plus yards away, he's gone 24-of-27.
Of course, Fassel would want him in Tennessee with him but that's more of a dream. The Cowboys have Aubrey under contract through 2025 and will make sure he'll be on the team going forward. Having a reliable kicker in the league isn't a guarantee so keeping Aubrey around is something Dallas will want to do.
