The Dallas Cowboys are in the final quiet portion of the offseason before training camp starts next month.

The Cowboys used OTAs and minicamp to get some reps in with the new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Players will need to impress the coaching staff and lock down their spots going into the season. While some guys already have their roles confirmed for the year, not everyone gets that benefit.

Luke Schoonmaker Didn’t Stand Out in OTAs

Jake Ferguson is the starter at tight end for the team, but it looks like the TE2 spot is still up for grabs. Some fans believed that it would have been Luke Schoonmaker, yet it sounds like Brevyn Spann-Ford is gaining steam going into the summer.

Spann-Ford got some first-team reps in minicamp before getting back with the second and third teams. He reportedly looks bigger going into 2025, and the fact that he got snaps with the starters shows he could be in line for a bigger role this season.

While that is a good development for him, it could be bad news for Schoonmaker. Despite being selected in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft by Dallas, he hasn't been able to be as productive as they wished.

In 34 games in Dallas, he had tallied 35 receptions (51 targets) for 306 yards, three touchdowns, and 8.7 yards per reception. Being the 58th-overall pick, Dallas was expecting him to be more of a weapon in the offense, but for some reason, it hasn't taken off. And with a new staff calling the shots, the Michigan product will need to take his play up another level. If not, he's at risk of being pushed down the depth chart.

As for Spann-Ford, he had nine catches for 88 yards and 9.8 yards per reception last season for the Cowboys. This battle for TE2 will be something to watch for this summer, and it looks like Schoonmaker has some catching up to do.
