The Dallas Cowboys still have a ton of difficult offseason decisions left to make. One of the biggest ones will be the backup quarterback. Cooper Rush already signed with the Baltimore Ravens, and Trey Lance is a free agent who remains unsigned. While Lance's NFL future is uncertain, all signs point to the former No. 3 overall pick leaving Dallas.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Ryan Flournoy was changing his jersey number to No. 19, the number Lance wore last season. Reading between the tea leaves, this signals that Lance is likely heading elsewhere in free agency.

All Signs Point to Trey Lance Leaving Dallas in Free Agency
This will be the third different jersey number Flournoy has worn as a Cowboy. After being selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Flournoy wore No. 18 during training camp and preseason before switching to No. 80 for the regular season. Following his rookie campaign in which he had ten catches for 102 yards in 11 games and 156 offensive snaps, Flournoy decided to go with a new look in 2025.
Flournoy will likely have an expanded role in his sophomore season after getting limited opportunities as a rookie. He will be behind CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, and KaVontae Turpin in the pecking order with a chance to overtake the latter two.
For Lance, on the other hand, this marks the end of a disappointing two-year stint in Dallas. Before the 2023 season, the Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick to acquire Lance from the 49ers. He wasn't able to win the QB2 role over Rush in two seasons and had only one start.
Considering his high draft selection and raw physical abilities and talent, Lance should still get a chance in the NFL as a high-upside backup QB2. Where he ends up for the 2025 season will be fascinating to watch for Cowboys fans.
