It was a nightmare for the 2025 Dallas Cowboys defense. Many are to blame for what was arguably the worst defense in franchise history, but new defensive coordinator Christian Parker is already on track to repair that, and part of that is watching a full season of young cornerback Shavon Revel.
Revel was a third-round pick out of East Carolina, and while Jerry Jones and Co. were already anticipating redshirting Revel after suffering an ACL tear in college. Revel missed the first nine games of the 2025 season, and when he made his NFL debut, it was clear he should've stayed on the bench.
But now, he's better than ever, and he told Tommy Yarrish from the official Cowboys' website that he's ready, but the coaching staff needs to proceed with caution instead of throwing him into the wolves right away.
"It's very beneficial," Revel said of being healthy during the offseason. "Just because I can clean up a lot of things, a lot of errors I didn't see last year, or I did see last year, that I could clean up this year...My knee is 100%, so now it's time to focus on situational ball and I've got to see what I need to fix or get better at."
Shavon Revel is back and healthy but the Cowboys still need to be careful
Revel's injury status should have fans excited, as we're finally going to see what the young CB can do in a revamped defense. Aside from returning from a severe injury, Revel's NFL career seemed to have started prematurely, as he had fundamental issues on the field.
During the Christmas Day game against the Washington Commanders, which the Cowboys won, Revel struggled to tackle, and it became apparent he had a lot of work to do this offseason.
Again, the rookie faced an uncomfortable decision on the worst defense in franchise history, but it didn't help that he was thrown to the wolves, and he truly was never ready.
On the bright side, he showed elite press-man coverage at East Carolina and has a great frame at 6-foot-2 and 194 pounds. But even with all of that working for him, the Cowboys have a deep CB room filled with DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant and rookie Devin Moore. Don't forget, All-American stud Caleb Downs will look to get some reps as the nickel cornerback.
That's quite the competition already, and it's OK if Revel still has to play second fiddle. Parker is the perfect coach to take Revel to his ceiling. The former Eagles pass game coordinator already has a history of developing Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Obviously, a long way to go for Revel, but he's got the right mentor to start his career.
It's great progress to see Revel is healing, but the Cowboys need to be strategic with Revel's reps on the field. He's on the right track to play, but it's important to be ready to play the right way.
