The Dallas Cowboys had their most impressive performance of the season in Week 5 against the New York Jets, taking care of business in the first half, to improve to 2-2-1 on the season. Despite numerous injuries to key starters on the offensive side of the ball, the Cowboys' offense continued to hum with Dak Prescott looking like an MVP candidate once again.
One of the players who got an opportunity amid the slew of injuries was dynamic rookie running back Jaydon Blue. Activated for the first time this season, the fifth-round pick got his first snaps of the season in Miles Sanders' absence. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer obviously wanted to bring him along slowly in his NFL debut, and Blue only lined up for 11 offensive snaps. With Javonte Williams looking dominant with an 8.4 yards per carry average, 135 yards, and a touchdown in the run game, Blue didn't have to do much, finishing the game with four carries and seven yards.
Yet, the Cowboys should still continue to give him a chance going forward and seriously consider him at RB2 in Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers.
Jaydon Blue Deserves More Touches Despite Quiet Debut
This was not the ideal circumstance for the talented rookie to show what he is capable of behind four backups on the offensive line. Despite the Jets remaining winless, their run defense has been solid all season, grading as a top-half unit in most metrics, including in Pro Football Focus run defense grade.
Blue should have an easier matchup against Carolina next week to show more of the flashes of his elite speed and athleticism he displayed in the 32-yard kick return on Sunday.
Miles Sanders will likely be back in Week 6, as he was listed as questionable for the clash vs. the Jets. Upon his return, he will likely take on a large offensive role since he has been effective in limited snaps so far this season. Yet, Blue is obviously the future of the position in Dallas, and it would be wise for the coaching staff to slowly increase his workload at the expense of 28-year-old Sanders. Blue's speed is unmatched, and he gives this offense a higher upside than the more predictable Sanders. This could also include more return opportunities, even when KaVontae Turpin returns from his injury.
The Cowboys have brought two rushers to the game day roster (plus fullback Hunter Luepke) so far this season. It may be time to find a way to get Blue in there for his big-play potential, regardless of what it means for Miles Sanders and the rest of the RB room.
