Cowboys Specialist in Danger of Losing Job After Repeated Mistakes
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys suffered the most embarrassing loss of the season on Sunday when they fell 47-9 to the Detroit Lions. After losing the first three home games of the season, the Cowboys have a lot of questions to answer as they head into their bye week.
Things don't get any easier for the Cowboys as they take on the 49ers, Falcons, Eagles, and the Texans when they return from their bye.
Understandably, the Cowboys' defense under new coordinator Mike Zimmer received most of the attention during the poor start. The team ranks 30th in the league in terms of points allowed.
However, it is not just the defense that is struggling. The team has been poor in all aspects, including the special teams. In fact, ESPN's Todd Archer identified a special teams ace that has been failing in his role all season.
C.J. Goodwin, one of the more reliable special teamers for the past seven seasons for Dallas, played 83% of the special teams snaps so far. Through six games, he already has four penalties.
Cowboys News: C.J. Goodwin Struggling Through Six Games
The 34-year-old veteran is regularly utilized across all special teams snaps, including field goal blocking, returns, and coverage. In 138 snaps, he has two tackles and two missed tackles to go with his four penalties. According to PFF, his 54.0 special teams grade is the second-lowest mark of his nine-year career.
Goodwin doesn't provide any value as a defensive back, only having seen 20 defensive snaps in the last four seasons. For a player who is exclusively a special teamer, Goodwin hasn't been good enough to justify a roster spot. Whether the Cowboys make the tough decision to part ways with a long-time member of the team during the bye week remains to be seen.
