Dallas Cowboys fans are patiently waiting for the regular season debut of young linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who told reporters last week that he’s eyeing Week 11 against the Las Vegas Raiders for his return. The Cowboys opened Overshown’s 21-day practice window on Oct. 20, so the clock is starting to wind down.

Cowboys supporters hope that Overshown is ready to go because the linebacker play this season has been subpar at best, as free agent signings Jack Sanborn and Kenneth Murray have left much to be desired.

In the meantime, Overshown will be using the next couple of weeks to ramp up in preparation for his 2025 debut. However, Cowboys fans had a brief moment of worry this week when it was reported that Overshown left practice early on Thursday.

That said, Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reported that Overshown’s exit involved “something with his hand or finger in a drill.” On Friday, Cowboys Brian Schottenheimer gave more clarification regarding the linebacker’s departure.

DeMarvion Overshown Exited Thursday’s Practice with Thumb Injury

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Schottenheimer told reporters that Overshown left Thursday’s practice due to a thumb injury. The head coach added that it was nothing serious, and he will get more work in on Friday.

As you can imagine, Cowboys fans were happy that their worst fears were not confirmed and that it was a minor injury. You can understand why the fan base was initially nervous when he left on Thursday, as Overshown has struggled with injuries to start his career.

The 25-year-old linebacker missed his entire rookie season in 2023, thanks to a torn ACL in a preseason game. Then last year, Overshown suffered a devastating knee injury that saw him sustain injuries to the ACL, MCL, and PCL.

It was a terrible loss for the Cowboys’ defense as Overshown played well in 13 games. He showcased his athleticism in stopping the run and pass coverage. He also had five sacks and 12 quarterback pressures.

With how the Cowboys’ defense has looked at all three levels this season, they could definitely use Overshown back on the field. That said, the former third-round pick won’t solve all of Dallas’ defensive warts, but he’ll be an upgrade over what they currently have.
