The Dallas Cowboys desperately need some help on the defensive side of the field. Fortunately for them, third-year star linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is inching closer to making his season debut. It's been nearly three weeks since the team opened his 21-day practice window, meaning a decision must be made soon.
That's why the fans sounded the alarms when some rumors about an injury setback flooded social media when Overshown left Thursday's practice early. According to Garrett Podell of CBS Sports, there's nothing to be worried about, even though he did leave practice early.
"LB DeMarvion Overshown (knee) left #DallasCowboys practice early with the training staff today, but it doesn’t appear to be anything serious," Podell reported. Even though there doesn't appear to be anything major to worry about, the latest news is far from encouraging.
DeMarvion Overshown Leaves Practice With Minor Injury
Cowboys beat reporter Joseph Hoyt had a similar understanding of the situation. Apparently, Overshown's early exit didn't have anything to do with an injury setback, and it was all because of some discomfort in his hand during a drill.
"DeMarvion Overshown left practice, but didn’t seem like there was a lot of concern, if at all. Sounds like it was something with his hand or finger in a drill," Hoyt wrote.
Of course, it makes perfect sense that the Cowboys want to err on the side of caution with their young star. Overshown is coming off a complicated knee injury, having torn his ACL, MCL, and PCL, so they need to make sure he's fully healthy before even thinking of getting him on the field.
Hopefully, Overshown continues to make progress during the next two weeks that his practice window is opened. If he can't play by the time that's over, he'll have to be placed on the season-ending injured reserve.
Overshown turned plenty of heads in his first full season in the league. He finished the 2024 campaign with 90 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, five sacks, four pass deflections, and one interception. His athleticism gives the Cowboys a much-needed playmaker who can make an impact against both the run and the pass.
As we previously discussed, Overshown's return spells the beginning of the end for Jack Sanborn. The former Chicago Bears linebacker joined the team on a $1.5 million deal to follow his former head coach and current defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, but he hasn't been much of a factor whenever he's been on the field.
The Cowboys are sitting on a mediocre 3-4-1 record after eight weeks, and most of their struggles can be traced back to the defense. Fortunately, it's still not too late to turn things around, and judging by owner Jerry Jones' latest comments about the trade deadline, it seems like the Cowboys' best hopes of turning things around will come from players coming back from injury.
Only time will tell if Overshown can be a part of that solution.
