Ahead of their Week 4 matchup, the Dallas Cowboys found out that they wouldn’t have star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb due to a high-ankle sprain. Due to the nature of these injuries, Lamb could be out for a significant amount of time.
The Cowboys didn’t make any free agent signings at wide receiver following Lamb’s diagnosis last week. However, Dallas decided to bring back a familiar face on Tuesday, which could be a telling sign of how long Lamb will be out. According to Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com, the Cowboys are signing veteran pass catcher Parris Campbell to their practice squad.
The 28-year-old Campbell was with the Cowboys for the start of training camp in July after signing a one-year deal in March. But the veteran was placed on injured reserve at the beginning of August and ultimately waived.
Cowboys Bring Back Parris Campbell with CeeDee Lamb Still Banged Up
As things currently stand, the Cowboys have four wide receivers on their practice squad heading into Week 5. Before last Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, Dallas called up Jalen Moreno-Cropper from the practice squad to give them five healthy WRs on the active roster.
Moreno-Cropper only played four special teams snaps in last week’s tie game. That said, the Cowboys likely want a veteran receiver like Campbell, who has some experience under his belt, and they can call up at least three times from the practice squad before officially signing him to the 53-man roster.
If Lamb was only scheduled to miss a couple of weeks, maybe we wouldn’t see Dallas bring in Campbell, especially with Jonathan Mingo eligible to come off injured reserve. They could easily call up Moreno-Cropper again or go with someone different (Jalen Brooks or Traeshon Holden).
However, the fact that the Cowboys re-signed Campbell could indicate that Lamb might be out for a while. Last week, Calvin Wakins of the Dallas Morning News reported that Dallas expects the star wide receiver to be out 2-4 weeks.
Thankfully, Dallas was able to survive without Lamb in Week 4, as George Pickens led the way with eight receptions (11 targets) for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Tolbert was right behind Pickens with four receptions (six targets) for 62 yards.
Dallas would love to see Pickens and Tolbert duplicate that going forward until Lamb eventually returns. That said, it won’t hurt having an experienced vet like Campbell contributing on offense if called up from the practice squad.
