The Dallas Cowboys' struggling defense could certainly use some help. That's why getting young star DeMarvion Overshown back on the field will be such a massive boost for defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.
Overshown, who will be the first player to wear No. 0 in franchise history, was initially expected to miss the entire season. Fortunately, he's now inching closer to making his season debut, setting the Week 11 game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders as his return. Of course, that's only bad news for Jack Sanborn.
DeMarvion Overshown's Return is the End for Jack Sanborn
"Monday night primetime, zero will be making his debut," Overshown said, per ESPN's Todd Archer. "I'm excited for it. It's not going to be anything short of extraordinary. I'm ready to show truly how blessed I am. A lot of people claim that this knee injury is one of the worst of the worst and not too many people come back the same afterward. I'm ready to put that to the test."
Sanborn, who joined the team on a one-year deal in the offseason, has been nothing short of disastrous in his first couple of months with the team, to the point that he was a healthy scratch in the win over the Washington Commanders. And with Overshown set to return in three weeks, Sanborn may not have many more opportunities to show that he's worth keeping.
The second-year pro went through individual drills for the first time since sustaining his ACL injury last season. He's expected to go through some 11-on-11 work, and while the Cowboys still have 21 days to add him to the 53-man roster, he's feeling pretty confident about what he can bring to the table:
"Look, I ain't going to go out there to try to do too much. I'm just going to do what I know I can do," Overshown said. "I know what I'm capable of. Last year was still me just getting my feet wet, so still really ain't seen what all I can do."
Last season, Overshown logged 95 total tackles, 16 pressures, five sacks, four pass breakups, three tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one interception returned for a touchdown in 13 games before his injury.
Sanborn is only tied to the team through the end of this season, and unless he makes the most of the opportunities he gets now -- if he gets any -- he's not likely to take the field again once Overshown is back.
