Javonte Williams passed with flying colors in terms of expectations for the Dallas Cowboys' RB room in the 2025 season. With the Cowboys still needing more, ESPN floated an idea that Cowboys fans would love, and it's not out of the picture for Jerry Jones and Co.

ESPN's Matt Bowen has Nick Chubb as a potential suitor for the Cowboys late this offseason. He's not going to be the 1,000-yard rusher he once was with the Cleveland Browns back five years ago, but he can be a piece to complement Williams' punishing run game. Chubb spent one season with the Houston Texans last season, but Bowen says the fit makes sense now for Chubb and the Cowboys.

"A veteran grinder at this point of his career, Chubb could provide value as the Cowboys' No. 2 or No. 3 option behind starter Javonte Williams. Chubb can still secure catches on swings and checkdowns in the passing game, but he should be viewed as an early-down option who can use his power and vision in short-yardage situations."

ESPN lists RB Nick Chubb as the best fit for the Cowboys

Chubb used to be viewed as an early down RB, but he needs to be utilized differently at this point in his career. He's not going to be the same player back in 2020, but he can still be a threat in the backfield on third down.

In large part, the questions at backup RB have to do with Jaydon Blue not proving himself quite yet. After the Cowboys' season finale against the New York Giants, when he ran for 64 rushing yards and a touchdown, Blue basically told us to watch him next season and see what's next. He never got any relevant reps, signaling that Brian Schottenheimer didn't exactly trust him on the big stage yet.

Malik Davis and Phil Mafah are next in what will be a tough RB competition this summer. Davis showed some strides of being a reliable backup, but like Blue, didn't get enough reps to prove his worth and only got on the statsheet late in the season. In 2025, Davis ran the ball 52 times for 250 yards and two scores. He may be the fan favorite that fans want to see more of, but in such a crowded RB room, Davis may unfortunately get the boot.

Hunter Luepeke looks like he isn't going anywhere. As Schottenheimer has shown, he clearly loves the sacrifices that Luepeke makes as a pass blocker. He's not going to get rid of that, and if Chubb can show just an ounce of that along with his running abilities, this is too easy a choice to pass up.

Williams is the clear RB1 for the Cowboys, but as a punishing athlete who takes physicality to the fullest, he's going to need all the help he can get. Chubb is a veteran who can take the load off Williams, and the Joneses don't have to dig that much deep in their pocketbooks either.

Spotrac has Chubb's market value at $1.3 million a year. If coached right, this can easily become a steal, and it looks like the price is right for Jones to follow through to get Chubb to Dallas.
