Former Cowboy's New Team Already Sick of Him After Struggles
By Cem Yolbulan
One of the most scrutinized moves of the Dallas Cowboys' 2024 offseason was the decision to let veteran left tackle Tyron Smith walk. After 13 seasons with the team, the star offensive lineman left to sign with the New York Jets to become Aaron Rodgers' blindside protector. The Cowboys filled the void with the first-round pick Tyler Guyton.
Guyton hasn't been particularly impressive as a starter so far but he is only 22 years old and five games into his NFL career. It's not surprising that he has been struggling so far.
What is more surprising is how Tyron Smith has been playing. As Jets insider Connor Hughes indicates, Smith allowed his fourth sack of the season against the Bills on Monday night. That is already the most sacks he has allowed in a season since 2015.

In addition, Smith has allowed nine QB hurries and two hits through six games. He has also amassed five penalties, already more than last season's number. On PFF, he grades as the 25th-best offensive tackle in the league with a 70.8 grade. That is a big drop off from his 83.8 PFF grade from a year ago.
In the grand scheme of things, Smith is still a valuable player. His veteran presence and competence are important for any contender. The Jets presumably expected more from the former Cowboy but it's important to note that Smith will turn 34 this season and has a ton of mileage.
New York has bigger problems including the ownership and the front office, so as disappointing as Smith may have been, the Jets need to focus on the bigger picture here.
