Former Rangers Outfielder Joins Brewers Coaching Staff
By Jack Gurley
Former Texas Ranger Julio Borbon made headlines for the first time in a long time. It was announced that Borbon would join the professional ranks for the first time in his coaching career as a first base coach with the Milwaukee Brewers going into 2025.
In 2010, young outfielder Julio Borbon was on track to be the Rangers starting center fielder for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately for Borbon, who was once regarded as one of the top prospects in the league, he was never able to quite pan out for the Rangers.
Although Borbon put up solid numbers through three years with the Rangers, a number of stints on the IR, and some inconsistent play led to his unceremonious departure from the team in 2013.
Since Borbon's departure from the Rangers, little has been heard from him. He bounced around the league for a couple of years playing for various teams at the minor and major league levels before joining the Mexican Baseball League in 2017.
After spending three years in the Mexican League, Borbon retired from baseball in March 2019 and returned to the MLB to begin his coaching career.
Borbon began his coaching career with the New York Yankees as a defensive coach for the team's Triple-A affiliate. In 2021, he was eventually promoted to manager of the Yankees' rookie-level affiliate team. Borbon remained manager until 2022 when he joined the Minnesota Twins player development department.
Borbon continues to move up the ranks in his coaching career and will now join Pat Murphy's staff as the Brewers' first base coach.
Borbon is one of several Ranger alumni who have made headlines regarding coaching moves this off-season. Former manager Chris Woodward rejoined the Dodgers coaching staff as a first base coach, and Robinson Chirinos will begin his coaching career as the Orioles bench coach.
