The Dallas Cowboys have to figure out their 53-man roster and make some tough decisions with the beginning of the season right around the corner. The Cowboys made headlines on Saturday when they picked up another offensive tackle.
Broderick Jones of the Steelers was traded for the Cowboys' third- and sixth-round picks in 2027. The Cowboys also picked up a 2027 fourth-rounder. It seems the Cowboys are addressing their concerns at offensive tackle, and that's been a topic of discussion for months now.
Who won the trade here? Did Dallas get what they needed? Did they also overpay for someone who is still trying to make his mark in the NFL? Let's grade the trade for both sides.
Grading the trade for the Cowboys
Protection for Dak Prescott is badly needed, especially when he's playing at his all-time best. For someone about to be in his mid-30s, solving the Tyler Guyton-Terence Steele debate is crucial.
Guyton has taken notice himself, and judging by what we've seen, he's earned the right to be the starting left tackle. He was in a brief battle with Nate Thomas, but the LT position is clearly Guyton's to lose. In terms of talent, Jones still has a lot to prove. His Pro Football Focus grade was 57.7, ranked 70th out of 89. His pass-blocking grade? Even worse. He earned a 59, which is second-to-last.
With Jones in the mix, the Cowboys have more depth at tackle and have reliable backups to depend on. Steele seems to be the one we have the most questions about, and we may see some competition in the future.
But this was a massive overpay for the value Dallas had to give up. Getting Jones is great, but losing 2027 picks for him isn't the greatest news in the world. It's not a failing grade, but this definitely could've come out better.
Grading the trade for the Steelers
Some Steelers fans aren't exactly hyped about Aaron Rodgers coming back for what will be his final season. Let's just say Rodgers at 42 isn't the same as Brady at 42, and fans are ready to find their new QB.
Mason Rudolph has been the backup for years, but there should be a sense of a bigger change than that. There's still Will Howard and Drew Allar to think about, but there should be some urgency to build around that.
These draft picks will be crucial to building the Steelers' future. They seem fine on the defensive end, but as of now, they look like a mediocre offensive team. Use those picks to get an offensive lineman or a receiver.
The Steelers got some good value, and they aren't missing out too much.
