Heisman Finalist Identified as Potential Cowboys Pick in 2025 NFL Draft

The Dallas Cowboys are out of the playoff race but still committed to winning despite it potentially hurting their pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Jerry Jones & Co. is not interested in tanking and wants to be as competitive as possible down the stretch.
If the season ended today, the Cowboys would have the 15th overall pick in the first round. The Athletic's Jon Machota and Dane Brugler pointed out how this would be Dallas' first top-15 pick since Micah Parsons in 2021.
The Cowboys could go a variety of ways with this selection. The team proved this season that there are plenty of weaknesses on the roster that need to be addressed. Brugler and Machota identified some of those holes and speculated who the Cowboys might pick in the first round to fill them.
One name they mentioned was particularly intriguing: the Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty. After having an incredibly productive junior season, the Boise State star is considered one of the best offensive players in the draft. He was overshadowed at times by how unique of a prospect Travis Hunter is, but Jeanty has the makings of an elite playmaker in the NFL.
This season, Jeanty rushed for 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns in 13 games, averaging 7.3 yards per carry.
There are almost no questions about whether Jeanty's game would translate to the NFL. There is no reason to think that it wouldn't. The only question would be whether running back should be a priority worth investing a first-round pick on.
In recent years, teams have shied away from drafting an RB in the first round. The last time the Cowboys took a running back in the first round was Ezekiel Elliott in 2016. Jeanty will almost certainly be an exception and considering how bad the Cowboys' rushing offense has been all season, targeting him makes a ton of sense.
