The Dallas Cowboys possess one of the best kick returners in the NFL in KaVontae Turpin. The former United States Football League (USFL) standout is a two-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro selection as a returner since joining the Cowboys in 2022. Unfortunately, Turpin is unlikely to play Sunday against the New York Jets due to a foot injury, according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

That said, Turpin's absence could open up even more opportunities for one Cowboys rookie. On Friday Morning, Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan that rookie Jaydon Blue is "more than likely" to play on Sunday. With Blue appearing set to be active on game day for the first time, he could see some chances to return kicks with Turpin out, allowing Dallas to test his skills against live action.

Rookie Jaydon Blue Likely to Be Part of Cowboys' Kick Return Unit Sunday

If Dallas opts to allow Blue to return kicks, it will be one of his first extended chances to do so. The rookie returned three kicks while in college with the Texas Longhorns, but he doesn't have much experience doing it. Even so, there's a chance returning kicks could be a dangerous part of his game.

At the NFL Combine, Blue showcased his blazing speed by running a 4.38-second 40-yard dash. He was even faster during his pro day after being clocked at 4.28 and 4.29, respectively. His elite speed, along with his ability to catch the ball and his ball carrier vision, could make him a dangerous return man with the new kickoff rules in place.

If the 21-year-old can prove to be a difference maker in the kick return game, then it will be a problem for opponents moving forward. Once Turpin returns, it will give Dallas two returners with sub-4.3 speed, which means no matter who they kick to, there's a chance for a big play.

However, kick returning isn’t the only role Blue could fill on Sunday. The rookie running back will see his first action in the backfield, with Miles Sanders out. During his time at Texas, Blue showed solid versatility, rushing for over 1,100 yards while also contributing as a receiver out of the backfield. That dual-threat ability could give the Cowboys a change-of-pace option, especially against a Jets defense that has struggled at times with speed backs.

Despite that being an exciting possibility, Blue must first prove he is capable of doing the job. Any good special teams coordinator would have already considered pairing Blue and Turpin. So, the fact that Nick Sorensen has yet to do so should tell Cowboys fans what they need to know.

Nevertheless, Blue should have the chance to change the narrative with his play in Sunday's game against the New York Jets.
