The Dallas Cowboys have turned the page on the previous chapter of their team history. The 2024 season was a massive letdown, finishing with a 7-10 record and missing the playoffs.

This group's production took a dip, which led to questions about Mike McCarthy. He led them to three straight postseason berths and 12-win seasons (2021-2023). Despite that success, the Cowboys decided it was in their best interest to go in a different direction for 2025.

Dallas hired Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach, elevating him from offensive coordinator. The organization held its introductory press conference for Schottenheimer on Monday. Owner Jerry Jones wasted no time discussing why the team moved on from McCarthy.

Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Explains Why Dallas Changed Head Coaches

Jones said, "It was time for a change. We spent five days getting to come to that decision. One of the reasons we came to that decision was because this decision was available to us."

This answer highlights how the Dallas organization has some serious flaws. Thinking it was the right decision to move on from a Super Bowl-winning coach for someone who never held the role of head coach before is shocking. They also had an entire season to "come to that decision," and wasting those five days meant they didn't have a real shot at top head coaching candidates like Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.

McCarthy has his own flaws, but his resume speaks for itself. Across 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and Cowboys, he has gone 174-112-2, including 49-35 with Dallas. McCarthy has made the playoffs in 13 of his 18 seasons as the head coach with eight division titles. The 61-year-old led the Packers to Super Bowl XLV.

Quarterback Dak Prescott played his best football under McCarthy. If the Cowboys moved on from McCarthy but landed one of the top coaches this cycle, like Mike Vrabel, Aaron Glenn, or Ben Johnson, it would have been a different story. Even if they were able to poach Deion Sanders from the University of Colorado, that would have been a slam-dunk hire.

They couldn't bring in any of these guys and decided on Schottenheimer. Despite being in the league for over 25 years, he's never been a head coach. He had the title of offensive coordinator for Dallas from 2023-2024 but didn't call the plays.

There's no proof that he'll be a good coach but Jones' statement shows he thinks he's smarter than everyone else. Being presented with Schottenheimer as a replacement wasn't anything to jump at.

Regardless of the public perception, the Cowboys made their decision and seem pretty happy about it.
