Mike McCarthy Makes Big Coaching Decision for 2025 Season
By Joe Summers
The Dallas Cowboys are currently sitting in turmoil following the controversial hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as head coach. They've made other uninspiring hires since, indicating a long offseason ahead for Dallas fans.
At the same time, other teams have made big coaching choices and are making additions to their respective staffs. Mike McCarthy, who many wanted to come back to the Cowboys to finish what he started, was a hot candidate with a reported chance of landing the New Orleans Saints job.
However, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rappoport of NFL Network reported on Tuesday evening that McCarthy will focus on the 2026 hiring cycle instead, deciding not to coach in the league in 2025.
Mike McCarthy Decides Not to Coach in 2025 NFL Season
McCarthy spent five years in Dallas, compiling an 84-49 record with three consecutive 12+ win seasons. His tenure was unfortunately marked by underwhelming playoff results, though there's no denying the success he oversaw.
Dak Prescott emerged as an MVP candidate, Micah Parsons led one of the NFL's best defenses, and fans were genuinely excited to cheer the team on. 2024 brought heartbreak and perhaps Schottenheimer can turn things around, though some wonder if Jerry Jones overplayed his hand and caused a setback.
When McCarthy was fired by the Green Bay Packers, he took time off before landing the Cowboys job. It appears he's now doing the same, which makes since considering the dwindling number of options in the coaching market.
The Saints have no quarterback of the future and a poor cap situation. McCarthy coached Prescott and Aaron Rodgers, so why would he risk his potential final job with a team that doesn't have a plan? After the 2025 season, he'll have more time to evaluate things and a better opportunity to interview for each available gig. Jones prevented that by playing coy until McCarthy's contract expired, putting the veteran coach at a disadvantage.
Now, he'll have time to prepare and make an impression for his pick of teams. That sounds like a win for McCarthy and once again, a misplayed hand by Jones.
