Jerry Jones' pride has stolen far more from the Cowboys than his wallet could ever them, yet his latest act of defiance could be the 82-year-old megalomaniac's Mona Lisa.

Less than two full days after claiming he was "fine" with other organizations interviewing Mike McCarthy for a job, Jones reversed course and denied the Chicago Bears' request to sit down with the Super Bowl-winning head coach.

Not only has Jones refused to offer McCarthy an extension as his contract is set to expire on January 14, but he's once again proven himself to be woefully incapable of handling the most important negotiations that an NFL team needs to make.

Either Jones wants to offer McCarthy an extension with the Cowboys or he's too proud to hand a subordinate any leverage. No matter how you look at it, this is an inexcusable decision.

Cowboys Refuse Bears' Request to Interview Mike McCarthy

On its face, it makes sense that Jones wouldn't want to let the Bears interview McCarthy before he's had the chance to make his decision on the coach's future. However, the Cowboys entered the season knowing that McCarthy was a lame duck coach and had the entire calendar year to figure things out.

For Jones to delay this matter for so long illustrates everything wrong with his actions leading the organization. Dallas spent dramatically more than necessary for both CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott thanks to Jones' stubborn nature. Now, they're facing the same possible outcome with McCarthy.

Instead of just re-signing McCarthy or moving on, Jones keeps kicking the can and letting other, more shrewd decision-makers jump ahead in the race for a Super Bowl.

He recognized that he set McCarthy up to fail with his lackadaisical offseason. Perhaps that's why Jones hasn't made up his mind yet. The longer he ways though, the worse the ultimate outcome will be.

Denying Chicago's request only makes it appear that Jones intends to re-sign McCarthy. Otherwise, it's merely an ego play that serves no purpose. There was no real downside for a McCarthy interview if he wanted the Cowboys job anyway.

Once again, Jones has egg on his face with no one around to clean up the mess.
