Jerry Jones Meddling in Cowboys QB Situation Right After MNF Disaster
By Jovan Alford
The Dallas Cowboys dropped their fifth-straight game on Monday night, losing 34-10 to their instate rivals, the Houston Texans on Monday night.
Dallas was embarrassed at home for the second straight week as their defense had no answer for Texans star running back Joe Mixon, who had 153 scrimmage yards and three rushing TDs.
As for the Cowboys’ offense, their lone touchdown came at the beginning of the second quarter as QB Cooper Rush connected with WR KaVontae Turpin for a 64-yard touchdown. It was an explosive play the Cowboys desperately needed, but that’s all the offense would do.
Rush played better than he did against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 13-of-23 (56.2%) passes for 45 yards.
Against the Texans, Rush completed 32-of-55 (58.2%) passes for 354 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He was also sacked five times, which isn’t surprising when the QB drops back 55 times.
The offense isn’t scoring points, but Rush kept the chains moving for what it's worth. After the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he wants to stick with Rush over Trey Lance because the veteran quarterback gives them the best chances to win games, per Jon Machota of The Athletic.
Jones isn’t ready to waive the white flag on the regular season, but the Cowboys are closer to a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL draft than a playoff spot. In the two games Rush has started, the Cowboys have scored one touchdown across eight quarters.
The last time I checked that’s not winning football. You have to score points to compete with the opposition. Would Trey Lance be better than Rush at this juncture? No one knows. In his brief appearance against the Eagles, Lance threw an interception.
However, we saw in the preseason the former first-round pick brings a different element to the offense because of his dual-threat ability. If Dallas loses next week to Washington, Jones needs to step aside and let McCarthy decide who will be the starting QB.
