Jerry Jones Just Started Off on Wrong Foot With New Cowboys Head Coach
The 2024 season wasn't an electric one for the Dallas Cowboys. They finished with a 7-10 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Following the season, there were discussions between Mike McCarthy and Jerry Jones on whether he would return.
They came to a resolution and decided to head in opposite directions. The Cowboys named Brian Schottenheimer as the 10th head coach in team history. His introduction press conference took place on Monday and owner Jerry Jones already made some questionable comments regarding Schottenheimer.
Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Makes Interesting Brian Schottenheimer Comments
When discussing hiring Schottenheimer, Jones said, "as big a risk as you can take," since the 51-year-old has no head coaching experience.
Jones then said, "I like his baggage. I like his experience."
Bringing in Schottenheimer was a bit of a shocker for Cowboys fans. He's been the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets (2006-2011), St. Louis Rams (2012-2014), and Seattle Seahawks (2018-2020). He then became the Cowboys' OC from 2023-24 but never called plays. That was all McCarthy.
He doesn't have HC experience, and Jones made that very clear in the opening presser. That is something that likely intrigued Jones. He loves the power that he has in decision-making on the team, and that will continue with Schottenheimer in the fold.
The 82-year-old wasted no time in finding a way to make the press conference about himself. Instead of boasting about their new coach, Jones wanted to say he's a "risk taker." That comment didn't need to be made but again, it highlights how Jones loves the spotlight.
Schottenheimer brings more than 25 years of NFL experience to the table, but he never landed an HC gig before Dallas. There's a reason for that but Dallas overlooked it. They are putting a ton of hope in Schottenheimer and Jones wanted to make it known how big of a risk that is.
He could have used this as an opportunity to uplift his new coach but instead, he did the opposite.
