The Dallas Cowboys are in Oxnard, Calif., to kick off training camp for the 2025 season. This offseason has been filled with moves along the roster and coaching staff, so the team is expecting improvement.
Owner Jerry Jones obviously wants his team to be better, and when speaking to the media on Monday, he took a jab at one of his star players.
Dallas Morning News writer Joseph Hoyt asked Jones why the Cowboys didn't wait to extend Trevon Diggs and Terence Steele like they do with other stars, but Jones seemingly acknowledges that the organization should have taken more time.
Jones also gave the reason why Dallas fined him $500K for missing workouts and said, "We expect a player that's paid like Trevon to be here all the time ... to be leading."

GREAT question by @JoeJHoyt. Why did the Cowboys not wait to extend Trevon Diggs and Terence Steele like they do for other high-profile players?

Jerry Jones: "Frankly... should we have waited on Diggs and Steele?"
Jeez.
Jerry Jones Has Some Resentment Towards Trevon Diggs’ Contract
Back in July 2023, Dallas and Diggs agreed to terms on a four-year, $97 million extension, which featured $42 million. Since getting that new contract, Diggs has only played in 13 total games. He tore his ACL in 2023 before missing time last year with more knee problems.
Last January, Diggs had to undergo surgery again on his left knee to fix a chondral tissue graft issue in his knee.
Diggs has a base salary of $8.5 million and has a $12 million cap hit in 2025. After getting his massive extension, the Alabama product has failed to stay healthy, and it's starting to annoy upper management. His inability to stay on the field has had ripple effects and plays a role in why the Cowboys are dragging their feet in extension talks with Micah Parsons.
Prior to going down, Diggs was a two-time Pro Bowler (2021-2022) and First-Team All-Pro (2021). In 45 games between 2020-2022, he had 169 total tackles, 49 pass deflections, and 17 interceptions.
Since then, those numbers have plummeted to 49 total stops, 14 pass breakups, and three picks.
He will even begin training camp on the PUP list and will miss valuable reps that would start getting him ready for the 2025 season.
Dallas wants their stars out on the field, and since Diggs hasn't been able to do that lately, Jones isn't thrilled and seems to be having some buyer's remorse.
