The Dallas Cowboys are 3-6 on the season and all hope for the season is gone. Dak Prescott is done for the year due to a hamstring injury. The defense is playing like a shell of itself. And Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his deal.

It's all but guaranteed that McCarthy won't get a contract extension and Dallas will be looking for a new head coach. Owner Jerry Jones made his appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Friday and raved about a former player being a good head coach in the NFL and even compared him to Detroit's Dan Campbell.

The person Jones is talking about? Jason Witten.

Cowboys News: Jerry Jones Raves About Jason Witten

When speaking about Witten, Jones couldn't hold back his excitement.

"Yes. Without hesitation. Yes. He has something that you can't draw up. He reminds me a lot of our other tight end who is head coach up there in Detroit right now (Dan Campbell). Jason is very sophisticated when it comes to understanding football and all the nuances. But more important than anything, he really does understand the physical and the mentality of being physical and that part of it. Without a question, he could become (an NFL coach). He has extraordinary work ethic. ... He can be a top coach."

Witten has been the high school head football coach at Argyle Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas, since 2021 after he retired. While he was one of the best players in Dallas history, he isn't someone the Cowboys should consider.

Granted, Jones didn't come out and say that but you can see where he's leaning. This response has already caught flack among the fanbase.

Witten spent 16 years in Dallas and developed a great relationship with Jones. That friendship is clouding Jones' thought process on Witten right now. He's never been a head coach at the college or professional level but the 82-year-old is comparing him to Campbell.

The same Campbell who flipped the culture in Detroit and has built them into one of the best teams in the NFL. He's 32-27-1 as a head coach with the Lions and led them to an NFC Championship Game appearance last season. A place the Cowboys haven't been to since 1995.

If Dallas wants to get back there, Jones needs to become a serious owner. Making statements like this isn't the way to go. It will certainly annoy the fanbase and show the team isn't serious about winning.

Comparing Witten to Campbell is a wild take. But that's Jones for you.
