Jerry Jones Makes Yet Another Delusional Claim That'll Hurt Cowboys' Future
By Joe Summers
Any chance the Cowboys had of making the playoffs is officially dead and Jerry Jones is largely to blame for the disastrous, disappointing season. Unfortunately, he hasn't learned his lesson.
Jones doomed Dallas by refusing to upgrade the roster after an early playoff exit, making those errors worse by paying more than necessary to retain both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Now that the Cowboys have a high draft pick in their sights, Jones wants to throw it away.
Any reasonable person understands that Dallas should lose every remaining game to ensure the best pick possible. Jones, however, is not a reasonable person.
Jerry Jones Declares Cowboys Won't Tank Despite Lost Season
There's an obvious irony of Jones commenting that success is "very important" as he simultaneously torpedoes any chance at success, though it's the right thing to say.
If the NFL season ended today, the Cowboys would pick 12th. That'd give the team an opportunity to draft someone like Boise State star RB Ashton Jeanty, yet Dallas could fall out of the running with another win or two.
They'll take on the Panthers, Buccaneers, Eagles, and Commanders to end the year. They'll be underdogs in all four contests but regardless, it's not hard to imagine the Cowboys pulling off an upset. They shouldn't for the sake of the franchise.
Jones isn't interested in the future. He's interested in the immediate media cycle and driving up revenue for the organization as a whole. That's a shrewd move as a business but a terrible way to approach running a football team.
Cowboys fans know this and aren't as delusional as the media might suggest. Jones certainly is, though hopefully the team brass around him are able to convince him to take one step backwards in order to take one step forward.
Even if it's unlikely, the Cowboys have no choice but to tank for the rest of the season.
