The Dallas Cowboys dominated the New York Jets on Sunday to the tune of a 37-22 win at MetLife Stadium. The Cowboys' offense was very efficient despite having several starters along the offensive line out, including star wideout CeeDee Lamb, who was still nursing an ankle injury.
Nonetheless, the Cowboys' offense had 416 total yards and 7.1 yards per play in their one-sided victory. Offensive coordinator Klayton Adams is a key reason for some of this success, and Dallas' strong offensive start is quickly turning heads around the NFL.
Klayton Adams Has Been Stellar with Cowboys Through Five Weeks
Adams was the Arizona Cardinals' offensive line coach for two seasons (2023, 2024). Last season, they were seventh in the NFL in rushing offense (144.2). Despite having more on his plate this year, the Cowboys' offense has been lights out.
America's Team is first in the NFL in total offense (406.6), third in passing offense (272.2), eighth in rushing offense (134.4), and fourth in points per game (30.2). This group hasn't missed a beat, even though they are dealing with multiple injuries to starters. They dropped 37 points in back-to-back weeks.
One of the biggest areas that Adams needs props is how well the offensive line played in Week 5.
Offensive linemen Tyler Smith, Tyler Booker, Tyler Guyton, and Cooper Beebe were all out, yet quarterback Dak Prescott was only hit three times and sacked once. He finished 18-of-29 for 237 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
The offense has been the least of Dallas' worries this season. Despite head coach Brian Schottenheimer calling the plays, Adams is a major voice in the game planning. For a coach in this role for the first time, he's passing the tests with flying colors through five weeks, and Cowboys fans should be impressed.
Hopefully, this level of play continues for the rest of the season. If it does, though, it'll only be a matter of time until Adams is a name that's thrown in head coaching conversations. We are still far away from that, but the Cowboys' early offensive success and what it means for their OC's future can't be ignored.
Scoring points and being an elite offense is a tall task, and that appears to be something that Dallas excels at. And the fact that they are doing that with backups in the lineup shows how great Adams has been.
