Jerry Jones has always made headlines since becoming the owner of the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. Now, he's not ruling out the idea of a familiar face in Dallas sports one day owning the Cowboys.
Mark Cuban, who's been involved in the Dallas Mavericks since 2000, is now a minority owner after giving up ownership to Patrick Dumont and Miriam Adelson in 2023. Per The Dallas Morning News, Jones mentioned Cuban as someone he respects when it comes to selling ownership, whenever that day will be, but we assume it will still be years from now.
EVP Stephen Jones is expected to take control once his father retires. Cuban being linked to the Cowboys is wild enough, but there are many reasons why he shouldn't be touching the most valuable franchise in sports at all.

Yes, we've had owners who have gone outside their sport before, but the Cowboys are too sacred a team to go outside the box and be cute here. Here's Jones advocating for Cuban to The Dallas Morning News.
“That’s exactly why if you’re me, you would be open to that is because of (Mark Cuban)... I have all the respect in the world for him and I know what he did for the Mavericks and what he’s done for basketball."
Cuban's investment group, Harbinger Sports Partners, purchased a minority stake in the Athletics MLB baseball team, and he told The News his fund "would be open" to the idea of being with the Cowboys.
The Jones family needs to keep the Cowboys in the family only
No one is saying Cuban doesn't know anything about football, but the Cowboys aren't just any team to play around with when it comes to ownership.
Fans back in 1989 were already against Jones' first move, firing Tom Landry, the first and only coach in Cowboys history for nearly three decades. Fans weren't exactly sure how to react, but three Super Bowls later, all seemed well. The Jones family is forever embedded in Cowboys lore, whether some like it or not, and it seems like the obvious move for the Cowboys to stay in the Jones family bloodline.
Whether fans want to say the Joneses should be forever embedded with the Cowboys is subjective to some, but Stephen already knows this organization in and out. It makes sense to keep the ownership in the family at this point.
The best days for the Mavericks have happened since Cuban became the owner, and to get back to that with Cooper Flagg in the mix. There was some hope he would buy the team back, but those talks have backfired.
If he doesn't even plan to buy the Mavericks again, then why even think about the Cowboys? He could only purchase a small portion at best. The price tag for the team is astronomical, and also the most valuable franchise on planet Earth at $13 billion.
Jerry Jones has done wonders to erase a usual crazy Cowboys offseason, but Cuban and the Cowboys in the same sentence will have plenty of fans talking.
Talk could be all it is, but this is still a bad idea, even if we're talking five years into the future.
