While the NBA offseason is still underway, transactions have slowed down. The league is waiting on a few big names like LeBron James and Jalen Duren to decide on their futures before teams can make the rest of their offseason moves.
The Dallas Mavericks have largely made their moves, adding rookies Morez Johnson Jr. and Sergio de Larrea and trading for Santi Aldama. Yet, they have two open roster spots and some cap flexibility to make more additions.
Regardless of who else Dallas decides to bring in this summer, who needs to be traded has become obvious after the first week of free agency. Veteran power forward P.J. Washington has become expendable on the revamped Mavs roster and may find himself as the odd man out.
P.J. Washington's time in Dallas may come to an end after the Mavs' offseason moves
Washington has been an important part of the Mavs' success ever since he was acquired at the 2024 trade deadline. His impact on the NBA Finals run was undeniable.
However, this is a new era of Mavericks basketball. Given how crowded the frontcourt in Dallas is, there is very little reason for the Mavs to keep him on the four-year contract extension he is just starting.
Washington signed a four-year, $90 million extension last summer that kicks in with the 2026-27 campaign. He is due $19.8 million next season. If he can stay healthy, the 27-year-old is likely worth that contract. There are simply not too many six-foot-eight combo forwards who can shoot, defend and generate shots at a decent level.
The problem is, the Mavs will have Johnson Jr. and Aldama competing for minutes at Washington's spot. Cooper Flagg will also get minutes at the four. Even Naji Marshall and Caleb Martin can slide up to the four and guard power forwards.
Among this crowded forward rotation, Washington may be the most expendable. Thanks to his age and skill set, he should attract interest in the trade market. The Mavs could gain future financial flexibility and assets by trading him, while opening up playing time for Johnson Jr. and Aldama.
If there are no good offers, the Mavs shouldn't be in a rush to trade Washington. Keeping him on the team and waiting to see if the offers at the trade deadline are not the worst idea. Whether he is moved this summer or in February, Washington's time in Dallas may come to an end sooner rather than later.
