The Dallas Cowboys have made it clear throughout the offseason that they hope to rebuild the running game, bringing in both Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency.
While Dallas completely ignored the wide receiver position in the 2025 NFL Draft, they did make an exciting decision to select Texas star running back Jaydon Blue.
One of the more electrifying players in the class with plenty of receiving upside too, Blue should immediately put Sanders on the hot seat. Williams figures to be the starter, though Blue should overtake Sanders quickly as a more exciting option.

Cowboys Rookie RB Jaydon Blue Will Quickly Take Miles Sanders' Job
As things stand, Sanders still has an opportunity to earn a role. He's only on a one-year deal worth a little over $1 million though, and it's clear the league has cooled on him as a bonafide three-down back. He averaged a pathetic 3.5 yards per carry as a Carolina Panther after averaging 5.0 with the Philadelphia Eagles, suggesting he was the beneficiary of an excellent offensive line instead of anything impressive himself.
Since Dallas has lacked a true difference-maker at the position since the early days of Ezekiel Elliott, the front office and coaching staff alike hope that Blue can inject some juice. He had 1,098 yards from scrimmage and 14 TDs in 2024 as a Longhorn, averaging a stellar 5.4 yards per carry.
At 5-foot-9 and 196 pounds with 4.38 40-yard dash speed, Blue is a home-run hitter who can take the ball to the house on any play. Rico Dowdle, who was good if not great last year, didn't have that same ability, and this running back room is in a much better spot than it was in 2024.
It remains to be seen exactly how new head coach Brian Schottenheimer will deploy his running back rotation. Regardless, fans should prepare to see plenty of Blue throughout the summer and into the fall. He represents something the Cowboys need, and Sanders should officially be scared about his spot on the team.
