Perfect Cowboys QB Upgrade Suddenly Available After Surprise Release
The Dallas Cowboys are struggling to survive life without Dak Prescott. With a partially torn hamstring ending the franchise quarterback's season, the Cowboys have struggled offensively in his absence with back-to-back losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans, scoring a total of 16 points along the way.
Even though Cooper Rush and Trey Lance have left much to be desired under center, finding a QB upgrade at this stage of the campaign is usually impossible. Fortunately, the Cowboys may have lucked into the perfect solution for their woes thanks to news stemming from an NFC East rival.
Cowboys News: Giants Release QB Daniel Jones
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the New York Giants have released QB Daniel Jones. The news came in the form of an announcement from Giants president John Mara, who revealed that the veteran signal-caller requested his release.
"(Jones) came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him," Mara said in the statement. "We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team."
"We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future."
Jones' release comes less than a week after the Giants benched their starting QB following a 2-8 start to the 2024 campaign. The former 2019 sixth-overall selections play has been largely inconsistent this season as he's completed 63.3% of passes for 2,070 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions while also turning 67 carries into 265 yards and another two scores.
But while Jones hasn't necessarily lived up to the hype so far in his NFL career, that doesn't mean the Cowboys shouldn't be interested in his services.
After all, it's hard to do worse than the Cowboys' current QB situation. Since Prescott left Week 9 with his injury, Rush and Lance have gone a combined 62-of-109 (56.9%) in the pocket for 535 yards, two TDs, and a pair of interceptions. Regardless of how you look at that, those simply aren't NFL-caliber numbers.
While it's been fun laughing at the Giants' failures in recent years, there's no denying that Jones would be an upgrade over the Dallas duo. The ex-Duke gunslinger has 70 games of NFL experience along with nearly 15,000 passing yards and 70 TDs to 47 INTs. With 2,179 rushing yards and 15 TDs on 399 carries, his mobility would also give a boost to the Cowboys' lethargic run game.
Considering how $105 million of his $160 million contract was guaranteed, the Cowboys can likely sign Jones to a cheap contract for the remainder of the season. If he ends up upgrading the QB room, great. If not, Dallas won't be in a bad place since his contract will come off the books at the end of the year.
If the Cowboys want to end the season on a respectable note, signing Jones might be their last chance to do so. It would also give the 27-year-old veteran a chance to face his former employer when the Cowboys host the Giants at AT&T Stadium in Week 13.
