3 Cowboys Who Have Locked Up a Roster Spot Before Preseason Finale
By Randy Gurzi
2. Caelen Carson, CB
This one might be a no-brainer for anyone who has been paying attention but still, Caelen Carson is a fifth-round pick and joined a stacked secondary.
The Cowboys already have two of the most game-changing cornerbacks in the NFL in Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland. Diggs had 11 picks in his second season in the league and Bland had nine in his. Bland also had five interceptions returned for a touchdown, setting the NFL record in the process.
Jourdan Lewis is their third corner and re-signed this offseason despite being contacted by Dan Quinn, his former defensive coordinator who is now the head coach of the Washington Commanders. Lewis is a solid slot corner who was instrumental in their wins over the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions down the stretch.
As for Carson, he's a player they reportedly considered taking in Round 3 over Cooper Beebe. That alone should tell you how highly the front office regarded him. They stuck with Beebe but the Wake Forest defensive back was still there at pick No. 174.
So far throughout camp, Carson has been one of the standout players. He's made several impressive interceptions and has shown no fear going up against any wideout. In the preseason games, he's held his own as well.
Carson still has some developing to do in order to be an every-down player but his potential is through the roof. He's likely going to be a replacement for Lewis when they move on from the veteran. Until then, look for him to be a fearless special teams ace who can find himself on the field in certain sub packages on defense as well.
