Football fans will have their thirst quenched as the NFL preseason gets in full swing this week. Cowboys fans don't have to wait long to see their team in action as they're set to host the Jacksonville Jaguars this Saturday at AT&T Stadium.
The first preseason game is always a good opportunity for players to prove why they deserve to be on the 53-man roster. While training camp is a good way to initially evaluate a player's progression, nothing compares to in-game scenarios.
As promising as Dallas looks on paper, there are still areas on the roster that need to be addressed. Fortunately, several available free agents can help increase the competition levels, bringing out the best in those involved.
Here are three last-minute signings the Cowboys must make before Saturday's preseason game.
Cowboys Roster Rumors
1. J.D. McKissic
There's no question about it: Dallas' backfield belongs to Tony Pollard. However, the pecking order behind him is up for debate.
The Cowboys added veteran running back Ronald Jones II this offseason, but he's suspended for the first two games of the season. The trio of Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle are next up, but only have 45 career carries between them.
In other words, adding another veteran RB to the mix wouldn't hurt and J.D. McKissic is the perfect man for the job.
At 29 years old, McKissic still has some juice in the tank. He's averaged at least 4.3 yards per carry over the last four seasons while also averaging 7.6 yards per reception throughout his seven-year career.
He's also coming off a neck injury, so chances are that adding him won't break the bank. He's looking to prove himself this season and joining an NFC contender like Dallas could bring out the best in him.
Even if it's only to motivate players like Vaughn and Dowdle, adding McKissic clearly has its benefits.
