5 Former Mavericks Still Unemployed After Free Agency Week 1
By Cem Yolbulan
Reggie Bullock
The 33-year-old small forward is an unrestricted free agent after his contract with the Houston Rockets expired. Appearing in 44 games last season, Bullock averaged career lows across the board, ending the season with 2.2 points in 9.5 minutes per game.
The Houston Rockets simply had too many mouths to feed. They were a rebuilding team with a ton of young players they wanted to give developmental minutes. In a different situation, Bullock can potentially play more and still make an impact.
Bullock first signed with the Mavericks in the 2021 offseason. In two seasons in Dallas, he was a productive two-way player, hitting 37% of his threes and fitting seamlessly next to Luka Doncic. He played a big part in the 2022 Conference Finals run where he averaged 39.3 minutes per game in the playoffs.
The former UNC standout isn't the player he once was but he should get another contract. Honestly, the Mavs bringing him back wouldn't be the worst idea.
Wesley Matthews
Another veteran shooter who is still out there is Wesley Matthews. Now 37 years old, Matthews will likely sign the last contract of his career, after spending last season with the Atlanta Hawks.
Matthews was with the Mavericks between 2015 and 2019 before he was traded to the New York Knicks in the Kristaps Porzingis deal. In 3.5 seasons in Dallas, Matthews averaged 14 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while hitting 36.9% of his threes. He was a prototypical three-and-D shooting guard who could defend multiple positions.
After he left the Mavericks, Matthews played on a few contenders including the Bucks and the Lakers but failed to win an NBA championship. At this stage of his career, he is unlikely to contribute on the court, but as a veteran presence in the locker room, he could find a roster spot and try to win his first title.
