Mike Zimmer & Mike McCarthy

When Mike Zimmer was brought in to replace Dan Quinn as the defensive coordinator in the offseason, Cowboys fans rejoiced. One of the best veteran coaches in the league, Zimmer could take the defense that consistently disappointed in the postseason to the next level.

It has only been four games but the early returns have not been promising. The Cowboys currently rank in the bottom ten in the league in terms of both yards and points. Their lack of intensity and inability to tackle was apparent against the Giants on Thursday. As a team, Dallas missed 14 tackles and finished the game with one sack. They arguably allowed Daniel Jones to have his best game of the season, consistently carving them up with plenty of time and space.

To be fair, Mike Zimmer doesn't have the same type of talent the previous Cowboys teams had. The departures in the offseason and the injuries to start the year have been an issue. However, considering the schedule the Cowboys played so far, one would have expected a higher level of defensive performance.

The same should be said about Mike McCarthy as well. He was able to avoid serious criticism to start the season because of the attention Zimmer has been getting. However, it's clear that the team is underperforming relative to its talent level on both ends of the ball. The run game has been a disaster on both offense and defense.

McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. If the on-field performance doesn't improve in the upcoming weeks, calls to replace him will only increase.
