6 Cowboys on the Trade Block Heading Into Training Camp
By Randy Gurzi
2. Trey Lance, QB
There's a belief the Cowboys have tossed around the idea of Trey Lance being the long-term quarterback but that feels like the "break glass in case of emergency" plan. They need to figure things out with Dak Prescott, who wants to get paid like an elite quarterback — because he plays like an elite quarterback.
Yes, the playoff struggles are a concern but he gets them there more often than not. Lance, on the other hand, has four career starts with 797 yards and a 5-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Mike McCarthy has an excellent track record with quarterbacks and maybe he can make it work, but the more likely scenario is Dallas being open to trading Lance.
This year, he's expected to be featured heavily in their preseason games. If he can go out there and impress, there might be some team willing to make the move. Desperation for good quarterbacks has led to some interesting decisions — such as the Atlanta Falcons paying Kirk Cousins a boatload of cash and then selecting Michael Penix in the top 10 of the NFL Draft.
Whether it's an injury suffered by a starter or perhaps a team such as the Las Vegas Raiders realizing they're about to have a battle between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell, someone might be willing to make a move.
Again, it all depends on how he looks in the preseason but if the Cowboys believe they can either recoup the fourth-round pick they sent to the San Francisco 49ers for Lance — or somehow get more than that — they're surely going to listen.
