6 Cowboys Who Won't Survive the Preseason
By Randy Gurzi
1. Eric Scott, Jr., Cornerback
When the Cowboys traded a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to get an extra selection in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, there was an audible groan among the fanbase. Typically, late-round picks aren't wildly important but this one proved to be since they used so many mid-to-late-round picks to add veteran players — Trey Lance, Brandin Cooks, and Stephon Gilmore.
Even so, the groan was due mainly to the player selected. Dallas chose Eric Scott, Jr. from Southern Miss. Scott wasn't necessarily a bad player but he was joining an already crowded CB room and was already going to be 25 as a rookie. Throw in the fact that he wasn't expected to be a highly sought-after prospect and the trade was just confusing in general.
Heading into 2024, Scott again found himself buried on the depth chart. Even with the departure of Gilmore in free agency, the Cowboys had their top three spots secured with Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland, and Jourdan Lewis. Rookie Caelen Carson has all but secured his spot as CB4, meaning there's only one spot remaining.
Scott could have gotten past Nahshon Wright but he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings ahead of the first preseason game. In exchange for Wright, Dallas added former Clemson standout Andrew Booth. He might not have lived up to expectations but the Cowboys saw something they liked and it's doubtful they made this move just to release him.
Throw in the solid play of Jos DeBerry in camp and it looks as though Scott's main hope will be a shot at the practice squad.
