Max Scherzer lived up to the hype yesterday, and now we have another new pitcher to look forward to with Jordan Montgomery making his Rangers debut today.

The Rangers aren't the only good bet to make, though. We've also got a WNBA pick and and NFL future for you to consider on this summer Friday.

Dallas Best Bets: August 4, 2023

Tyler Maher: Rangers Moneyline vs. Marlins

One of the best parts about baseball in early August is getting to see players debut with their new teams after the trade deadline. We got to do it last night with Max Scherzer, and we get to do it again tonight with Jordan Montgomery.

Montgomery was excellent for the Cardinals before being acquired on Sunday, going 6-9 with a 3.42 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 21 starts this season. He should benefit from a strong supporting cast in Texas, especially being backed by the best offense in baseball.

Jesus Luzardo doesn’t have that luxury for the Marlins. Miami ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring at 4.09 runs per game, which is well below the Rangers’ league-leading mark of 5.75.

Luzardo has similar numbers to Montgomery with an 8-5 record, a 3.38 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 22 starts this season, so the Marlins should be able to keep things close. Miami has a losing record on the road, though (24-28), while Texas is 37-20 at home.

Back the Rangers to remain undefeated in August after sweeping the White Sox earlier this week.

Isaiah De Los Santos: Arike Ogunbowale OVER 21 Points

Friday features a packed slate of WNBA action, including a matchup between the Wings and Sky at 8 p.m. ET. After getting back on track last game, Arike Ogunbowale has a good shot to go over her points total tonight.

Dallas’ leading scorer came out of the All-Star break red-hot, posting three straight outings of 25 points. She dipped below 20 in the two ensuing games, but a date with the lowly Storm on Wednesday helped her right the ship. She exploded against Seattle, popping off for 27 points and going 5-of-12 from deep.

It was great to see Ogunbowale come out aggressive with 21 field goal attempts. Now she’s in a prime position to keep things going against the Sky, who have allowed the sixth-most PPG to opponents this season. The three-time All-Star also lit up Chicago in their one previous meeting this year to the tune of 27 points on May 28, so she knows how to exploit this defense.

Jason Schandl: Cowboys to Win NFC East

I’ve already talked to you about betting the Over on the Cowboys’ win total recently, but how about we look at a bigger payout? Getting nearly 2-to-1 on Dallas to win the NFC East is hard not to love.

The Cowboys’ strengths largely speak for themselves. A defensive core of Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs and Stephon Gilmore means we have one of the best units in the NFL on that side of the ball. The Eagles’ defense is getting a ton of hype, but we’re right there next to them.

As for the offense, I’m a true Dak believer this season. There’s no longer a risk that we suddenly become enamored with pounding Zeke into the middle of the defense for 3 yards at a time, and we finally get to open things up on the offensive end.

CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup form one of the best wide receiver trios in the NFL, and there aren’t many backs as explosive (on the ground or as a receiver) as Tony Pollard.

Dak’s coming off a down year, sure, but he also had arguably the best season of his career in 2021. I don’t love having Brian Schottenheimer as OC, but with the weapons at his disposal I’m not overly concerned about that.

Philly is getting overrated, and that makes for some nice NFC East value on Dallas.
