CeeDee Lamb's Response to Jerry Jones Puts Cowboys on Notice
By Jovan Alford
The Dallas Cowboys have drawn a proverbial line in the sand when it comes to contract negotiations involving star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
The star wide receiver has made it abundantly clear that he won’t appear at training camp until he receives a new deal. Lamb wasn’t at mandatory minicamp in June and has missed the first two weeks of training camp.
The longer the Cowboys wait to get a new deal done, the more pressure the fanbase will put on Jerry Jones and Co. to fix this situation with Lamb. Jones made a bizarre statement after Dallas’ joint practice against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, which will not help negotiations go any faster.
According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones told reporters he has no urgency to get a deal done with Lamb. As you can imagine, Cowboys fans weren’t thrilled to see Jones’ comment as Lamb is the team’s best wide receiver and playmaker.
Lamb caught wind of Jones’ comments and fired back on social media, posting “lol”. It was a passive-aggressive statement by the star wide receiver, but one that the Cowboys should take seriously.
The former first-round pick hasn’t said much about the progress of the contract talks, but one can only imagine he’s not happy that the team has failed to get a new deal done when other wide receivers in the NFL are getting paid.
Lamb is coming off his best year as a professional in 2023, posting 135 receptions (185 targets) for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns. No other Cowboys wide receiver is putting up the numbers that Lamb did and Jones needs to understand that.
The worst thing the Cowboys can do is have this saga play out on social media as it will make Jones and the organization look bad. After not doing much of anything in free agency, Dallas doesn’t have that much grace from the fan base and Lamb’s response on Twitter doesn’t help.
With all that being said, one wonders what the next step in this ongoing drama will be. Jones can continue with his hardball stance, but it will only hurt the team in the long run. For Dallas to make a deep playoff run this season, they need Lamb on the field and it only happens with a new deal.
