Cowboys Continue to Bring In Mike Zimmer Favorites After Worrisome Training Camp Injuries
As training camp rolls on, the Dallas Cowboys' offensive line continues to face hardships. Second-year tackle Earl Bostick Jr. left Wednesday's practice with a concerning ankle injury, coming one day after the Cowboys revealed that veteran blocker Chuma Edoga would be opening the regular season on the injured reserve.
With meaningful football games being just a few weeks away, the Cowboys can't afford to enter the regular season with a depleted frontline. That's why the franchise has decided to work out one of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's favorite players in hopes of improving the situation.
Cowboys News: Dallas to Work Out OL Dru Samia
Cowboys insider Nick Harris is reporting that Mike McCarthy's coaching staff is working out veteran offensive lineman Dru Samia. The former Oklahoma blocker was drafted 114th overall by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 before playing two seasons under Zimmer's guidance.
Samia, 26, isn't the first former player that Zimmer has lured to Dallas this offseason. The Cowboys' first offseason signing was linebacker Eric Kendricks, who played seven seasons for the 68-year-old DC during their time with the Vikings.
Samia entered the NFL oozing with potential. He was one of the Big 12's top blockers throughout his run with the Sooners, earning two all-conference nods as well as 2018 co-offensive lineman of the year honors.
Unfortunately, Samia hasn't been able to find NFL success. He played 151 passing downs in his two seasons with Minnesota, surrendering seven hurries, four quarterback hits, and three sacks along the way. He registered a Pro Football Focus pass block grade of 17.0 in 2020, which was also the last time he played a meaningful football game.
The ex-Oklahoma OL hasn't been healthy enough to earn playing time since then. Injuries caused a premature end to his Vikings tenure and were a reason why he didn't see any action in his two years with the New York Jets.
He most recently spent the 2023 season with the XFL's Arlington Renegades. Samia appeared in nine of 10 possible games as the Renegades went 3-7, failing to make the playoffs in the process.
It'll be interesting to see how much (if any) action Samia sees when the Cowboys meet the Las Vegas Raiders for Saturday's preseason showdown. America's Team could use all the help it can get given that they're currently the 7-point road underdogs on FanDuel Sportsbook.
