Cowboys Get Game-Changing Trevon Diggs Injury News
By Jovan Alford
The Dallas Cowboys officially opened training camp last week in Oxnard, California, with a few storylines on the docket, including the status of Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs. Diggs was placed on the PUP list to start camp as he’s been rehabbing from a torn ACL that he suffered early last season.
The Cowboys are looking forward to having Diggs back on the field eventually as he’ll play a huge part in their success on defense. Dallas didn’t re-sign Stephon Gilmore in the offseason, but they likely know they’ll have Diggs playing opposite of DaRon Bland this season.
On Tuesday, Dallas received some great news regarding Diggs, which should excite fans with the preseason on the horizon. Jon Machota of The Athletic reported that the 25-year-old corner was removed from the PUP list and is eligible to practice.
There hasn’t been much to be excited about or cheer for involving the Cowboys over the last few months. But the news of Diggs being activated from the PUP list is fantastic for Dallas. A healthy Diggs paired with Bland gives the Cowboys one of the best starting outside cornerback duos in the NFL.
Last season, Bland shined on the boundary under then-defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. The former fifth-round pick produced 69 combined tackles, 15 pass deflections, nine interceptions (league-high), five defensive touchdowns, and three tackles for loss.
Bland might not reach those numbers this season, but having Diggs playing on the opposite side, will make opposing quarterbacks think twice. In 2022, Diggs made his second-straight Pro Bowl, recording 59 combined tackles, 14 pass deflections, and three interceptions.
The 6-foot-2 cornerback didn’t come anywhere close to the 11 interceptions he snagged in 2021, but he’s proven that he’s one of the better defensive backs in the league. Dallas will likely not rush Diggs back into action as it hasn’t been a full year since he suffered the ACL tear.
