After a disappointing offseason, the Dallas Cowboys are set to open training camp on Thursday in Oxnard, California, with rookies and veterans reporting.

There are a lot of storylines surrounding the Cowboys, which is never a good sign to start a new season. However, we know Dallas will never shy away from the limelight, so it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few weeks.

With training camp on the horizon, the Cowboys will have to make some roster decisions on a few players, who were injured last season; or went through offseason surgeries.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that cornerback Trevon Diggs will start camp on the active/PUP list. Meanwhile, DeMarvion Overshown, Mazi Smith, John Stephens Jr., David Durden, and Luke Schoonmaker should be ready for camp.

If you are a Cowboys fan, it’s not shocking to see Diggs still on the PUP list as he’s not even a year removed from his torn ACL last season. According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys officials believe the star cornerback will be ready for the regular season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 8.

As for Overshown and Smith, the Cowboys are expecting big things from them as this defense is moving in a new direction under Mike Zimmer. Smith was a non-factor his rookie year, recording 13 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, and a sack.

The former first-round pick also only played 28 percent of defensive snaps. Finally, Overshown missed his rookie season with a torn ACL in Dallas’ second preseason game last summer. With the Cowboys losing veteran Leighton Vander Esch to retirement, the team needs Overshown, Damone Clark, and rookie Marist Liufau to step up.

Cowboys fans shouldn’t have extraordinary expectations for Overshown, given he’s coming off an ACL tear. However, if Overshown looks like the player we saw coming out of the University of Texas, Dallas’ defense might be in a good spot this season.
