Cowboys Give Shocking Jake Ferguson Update on Tuesday
By Jovan Alford
The Dallas Cowboys took a huge sigh of relief on Monday after it was reported that starting tight end Jake Ferguson only suffered an MCL sprain in Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns.
Ferguson suffered the left knee injury with 6:23 left in the third quarter. After the game, head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that Ferguson was “in good spirits,” which Dallas fans wanted to hear.
However, with the third-year tight end banged up, there’s a chance he could miss some time to let the sprain heal, leaving Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford as the next options for Week 2 against the New Orleans.
Nevertheless, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes Ferguson could be back on the field for this weekend’s home opener.
According to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News, Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday that he’s optimistic about the standout pass catcher playing on Sunday.
This information isn’t shocking to hear from Jones as NFL reporter Ed Werder said on Monday that the Cowboys believe Ferguson’s injury “is not serious” and “will miss a minimal amount of time, if any.”
That said, with it still being the second week of the regular season, the Cowboys are better off taking it safe and slow with Ferguson. He’s a big part of their offense as the de facto WR3. Last season, Ferguson had 71 receptions (102 targets) for 761 yards and five touchdowns.
The worst thing the Cowboys can do is play Ferguson and his sprain doesn’t improve. With their defense and playmakers at the skill positions (WR/RB), Dallas should see how Ferguson practices this week, but ultimately prepare to start Schoonmaker.
