Cowboys RB's Time in Dallas Possibly Nearing an End After Surprise News
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys and their running back rotation have been an endless point of debate in the NFL world all year. It started in the offseason when the Cowboys parted ways with Tony Pollard and replaced him with post-prime Ezekiel Elliott. A lot of fans scratched their heads at the decision to start the year with the Rico Dowdle, Elliott, and Deuce Vaughn backfield. Right before the season, the Cowboys added Dalvin Cook into the mix, signaling the potential demotion for someone.
Heading into Week 5, we finally have an answer to who that may be. Cowboys insider Todd Archer reported that Vaughn is going to be inactive against the Steelers on Sunday night. Dowdle, Zeke, and Hunter Luepke will be the active running backs on Sunday Night Football.
Cowboys News: Deuce Vaughn Healthy Scratch vs. Steelers in SNF
This comes as a surprise as this was the first week Vaughn was a healthy scratch this season. Vaughn saw offensive snaps each of the previous four weeks and Dalvin Cook wasn't elevated to the active roster this week, making this move an unexpected one.
The need for a change in the Cowboys' RB rotation was more than obvious. They average 3.5 yards per carry and put up an NFL-worst 301 yards and only two touchdowns through four games.
However, this change coming in the form of demotion to Vaughn was less obvious. The second-year rusher out of Kansas State has 20 yards on seven carries for the season. He wasn't particularly effective in his limited playing time last year, either.
It's hard to say that the sixth-round pick got enough of a chance in Dallas. Considering the state of the RB room, he probably should have gotten more of an opportunity. But it doesn't look like that is coming and his time with the Cowboys may be coming to an end soon.
