The Dallas Cowboys are most likely going to enter the 2024 NFL season with quarterback drama. Dak Prescott is entering the final season of his contract and the Cowboys seem prepared to let things play out rather than giving him a massive extension.

This is obviously a major risk. Even though Prescott failed to deliver the Cowboys a Super Bowl during his time, he has consistently been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Risking the possibility that your perennial MVP candidate can walk in free agency next season is not something many NFL franchises would do. But that is where the Cowboys are right now.

However, Prescott is being a consummate professional about it all. In fact, he is already showing his leadership, motivating his teammates, even his backup Trey Lance.

In his remarks to the media, Prescott complimented Lance's improvement since he arrived in Dallas, highlighting his hard work.

It is great to see that Prescott is welcoming competition from Lance. Even though he knows that his future is uncertain with the Cowboys, Prescott has the right attitude when it comes to competition.

"As long he is getting better, I promise you I’m getting better. I encourage it. I hope he pushes me. I hope he makes people think. I know where I’ll be and I know who I am. I’m confident in the person and player that I am. I hope he does. I hope he pushes me."

Dak Prescott on Trey Lance

Trey Lance was acquired by the Cowboys in a trade with the 49ers last offseason. He was named the third-string quarterback behind Cooper Rush but is expected to be the main backup to Prescott in 2024. He hasn't been able to live up to the hype generated by his third-overall selection yet but he is still only 24 years old.

Like Prescott, Lance's contract expires at the end of the season. This year will be a referendum for both quarterbacks. Whether the former North Dakota State star will get a chance to show what he is capable of remains to be seen but Prescott's remarks about him are extremely encouraging.
