This isn't what most Cowboys fans had in mind for their sixth-round pick.

Deuce Vaughn was an immediate fan favorite after Dallas selected him with the 212th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. But while Cowboys fans were largely unanimous in loving Vaughn, there was a pretty big divide on expectations for whether he'd even make the final roster or not.

That divide may no longer exist, however, as instead of fighting for the RB3 role to earn a roster spot, Vaughn may well be emerging as the team's RB2 behind Tony Pollard.

Cowboys insider Mike Fisher dropped a bomb on Wednesday, revealing that not only was Vaughn's roster spot never really in question, but also that he's way higher on the depth chart than most fans expected.

I'm sitting here trying not to let myself get too carried away with the Vaughn hype yet, but let's indulge it for a minute.

Vaughn was one of the most productive running backs in college football. He had over 1,800 yards from scrimmage in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and he did that against legitimate competition in the Big 12.

Between Malik Davis, Ronald Jones and Rico Dowdle, it seemed like Dallas would find a definite RB2 ahead of Vaughn though, and even possibly an RB3. But with Jones suspended and Davis not getting much buzz in camp, the opportunity is suddenly a lot more interesting.

And Vaughn is absolutely doing his best to seize that opportunity.

I'm not convinced the smallest running back in the NFL could stand up to a full workload as a starter, but with Tony Pollard filling that role we don't need Vaughn to. His explosiveness would make him the perfect option to spell Pollard when needed, keeping the Cowboys' offense at its full explosive level no matter which RB is on the field.

That's a huge upgrade from Ronald Jones potentially bogging things down when Pollard needs a breather.

There hasn't been a ton of good news coming out of training camp lately, so it's great to finally see something positive like this.

And negativity aside, this is still a team that ranks top three in the odds to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl this season.
