The Dallas Cowboys are hoping for second-year tight end Luke Schoonmaker to take his game to another level this coming season.

There’s a lot of pressure for Schoonmaker to be a playmaker in the Cowboys’ offense after he had a quiet rookie season in 2023. Last season, Schoonmaker only posted eight receptions (15 targets) for 65 yards and two touchdowns.

It wasn't an impressive season for the former second-round pick as Dallas had other pass catchers to lean on in the passing game. That said, with the Cowboys not having a solidified WR3, there’s a pathway for Schoonmaker to have a larger role in the offense.

However, for Schoonmaker to receive that larger role, he must perform in the preseason and stay healthy in training camp. Thus far, the second-year tight end hasn’t been able to do the latter.

Cowboys Rumors: Luke Schoonmaker Misses Monday’s Practice With Injury

On Monday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reported that Schoonmaker didn’t practice due to a groin injury.

Head coach Mike McCarthy was expecting Schoonmaker to practice today, but instead, he did prehab work, according to Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com. The young tight end dealt with a hamstring injury in the spring, plantar fasciitis as a rookie, and shoulder surgery this offseason.

Last week, McCarthy spoke highly of Schoonmaker’s performance in camp but also mentioned that he needs to stay healthy.

The more time Schoonmaker misses, it will hinder his development and growth heading into his second season. Nonetheless, the Cowboys hope the former second-round pick will be ready to go over the week.
