International Game Remains Slim Possibility for Cowboys in 2024

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Ever since the NFL started having international games in 2007, Jerry Jones has made one thing clear: he doesn't want the Dallas Cowboys to play abroad, especially as the "home team." The Cowboys regularly sell out and have the highest attendance in the NFL, so it makes sense for the owner to not want to lose out on the profit that comes with that.

The Cowboys have been successful in avoiding that scenario so far. Dallas has never had a home game moved overseas and only played one international game in that time (vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars in London in 2014).

They may not be so lucky this time around.

The Dallas Cowboys may have to play an international game in 2024

The Cowboys may not want to "host" an international game but they might not have a choice in playing in one. Even Jerry Jones has said that he is open to that possibility.

"We don't want to give a home game up to go play a game someplace else. We can make it work under certain circumstances when we're the visiting team. We can make that work."

The Cowboys' 2024 schedule has one game that could become an international affair. As Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News notes, the Cowboys matchup against the Carolina Panthers might be the ideal scenario for the league.

The Panthers already hosted the Cowboys in Week 11 of this past season, when Dallas defeated them 33-10. And Carolina has a home game scheduled in Munich, Germany for 2024, and the Cowboys are a road opponent for the Panthers. Assuming that the league doesn't want to have two non-division teams play the same game two seasons in a row, there is a very real chance that the 2024 game will be moved to Germany.

Jerry Jones has mentioned that he wants the Cowboys' international games to be in Mexico City, if possible. Germany is not Mexico in terms of the popularity of the Cowboys, but it may not be a bad idea to build that fanbase in Europe.
