The Cowboys agreed to a mammoth contract extension with star QB Dak Prescott on Sunday morning just hours before the Week 1 slate began, yet Jerry Jones wasted no time in already raising questions about the new deal.

True to form, Jones couldn't resist throwing smoke to the fire surrounding an already contentious debate.

Even on what should be an exciting day, Dallas' owner has a desperate need to create headlines that supersedes all desire to field a competitive team.

Jerry Jones Immediately Questions Dak Prescott Contract Extension

Prescott's four-year, $240 million extension makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history. His $231 million guaranteed speaks to the poor way Jones and his team handled these negotiations, waiting until the last possible moment to sign a deal that wound up giving Prescott much more money than he could've gotten previously.

Jones' strategy with pending free agents is questionable at best, and it's cost Dallas a significant sum over the years. It makes sense that these numbers are "beyond anything" he could've imagined, especially considering teams like the Jaguars, Chargers, and Packers all locked up their quarterbacks for smaller contracts well before the Cowboys made their move.

Regardless of the impact on Dallas' salary cap, the Cowboys now have their offensive core locked in for the foreseeable future. CeeDee Lamb and Prescott are both on the team moving forward, with Micah Parsons being the only question mark.

Based on Jones' strategy with Lamb and Prescott, it feels likely that Parsons will wait until the last moment before signing a larger extension than he would've had Jones simply made an adequate offer up-front. We'll see what happens, but it doesn't sound like Jones has learned anything from his recent mistakes.
