Jerry Jones Makes First Comments on Cowboys Signing Dalvin Cook
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Cowboys finally addressed their running back room earlier this week and signed veteran rusher Dalvin Cook. This raised some eyebrows around the NFL as Cook was a free agent for the duration of the offseason.
Not bringing him in for training camp and preseason is difficult to understand. Signing him the day before plenty of running backs were going to hit the waiver wire around the league was also mind-boggling.
At the same time, he was only added to the practice squad. He is more of a low-risk, high-reward flyer for the Cowboys. That was made clear in Jerry Jones' first remarks since the signing.
Jerry Jones Provides First Remarks on Dalvin Cook
Jones underlines Cook's need to come in and learn the system. The fact that he is on the practice squad to start, presumably suggests that it might take a while for him to get snaps at first. However, Jones seems optimistic about the veteran's ability to contribute this season.
"We had a workout for him. He’s in good shape. He’ll get a lot more work. He will learn our system as he goes. He could easily really help us out this year. I'm really pleased with where we are right now at running back. "

Even though adding Cook carries little risk, there is certainly an opportunity cost here. The Cowboys already have a post-prime running back in Ezekiel Elliott. The rest of the rotation of Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn doesn't necessarily instill confidence among the Cowboys fanbase. There was hope that the RB addition would be someone with fewer questions about him.
If Cook or Zeke can turn back the clock this season, the Cowboys offense could look very dangerous. Let's hope it's not too much to ask from two aging rushers with a ton of miles on them. Otherwise, the Cowboys might regret some of these offseason transactions.
