Mavericks About to Land Another All-Star in Free Agency per Betting Odds
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Mavericks already began building their roster for the 2024-25 season by trading away Tim Hardaway Jr. and bringing in Quentin Grimes from the Detroit Pistons. Not only does this make the Mavs a better team, but it also creates significant cap space for them to be more active in free agency.
The priority for the Mavs is to re-sign Derrick Jones Jr. in free agency. However, they will likely not be satisfied with just that. In fact, sportsbooks believe that they will be heavily involved in the Klay Thompson sweepstakes. On DraftKings Sportsbook, the Mavericks have the second-best odds with +250 to be Thompson's next team.
Klay Thompson's Next Team Odds
Klay Thompson's Next Team | Odds |
---|---|
Orlando Magic | +150 |
Dallas Mavericks | +250 |
Golden State Warriors | +450 |
At age 34, Thompson is obviously not the player he once was but his fit in Dallas is undeniable. He is still one of the best shooters in the league and having him as a shooting threat next to Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will be a scary situation for opposing defenses. On the other side of the ball, Thompson slowed down a bit but he is still a decent defender that shouldn't hurt the Mavericks.
Dallas likely doesn't have enough cap space to sign Thompson outright. Therefore, they will either have to clear cap space by trading away Maxi Kleber and/or Josh Green, or they have to engineer a sign-and-trade with the Warriors. Considering how much Thompson has given the Warriors franchise, if he wanted to sign with Dallas, they will likely make that sign-and-trade happen.
The Mavericks made the NBA Finals last season but they are likely one piece away to take that next step. Klay Thompson could easily be that missing piece as one of the best 3-and-D players of all time.
