Mavericks Receive Shocking Offseason Injury News
By Cem Yolbulan
The Dallas Mavericks are riding high after making the NBA Finals and making solid offseason additions with Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and Quentin Grimes. The reigning Western Conference champions will be even stronger next season with one of the most talented rosters they were able to put around Luka Doncic.
Unfortunately, however, things took an unexpected turn on Tuesday. The Mavericks just announced that Kyrie Irving underwent surgery to repair a broken left hand. The All-Star guard reportedly suffered the injury while training earlier this month.
"While the Mavericks did not provide a timetable for Irving to be cleared to return to basketball activity, a team source expressed optimism that he would recover in time to participate in training camp."

One silver lining out of this is the fact that it happened so early in the offseason. The 2024-25 regular season doesn't start for another three months, giving Irving enough time to recover and be on the court in October. The reporting suggests that there is "optimism" that he would participate in training camp.
While that is not the worst-case scenario given the circumstances, it is also not an ideal situation. This means that Irving will not be able to go through his usual offseason workout routine and will potentially need additional time to play himself into shape.
For a championship contender like the Mavericks, that is not a big deal. Dallas needs Irving to be healthy and in-form come playoff time. However, the Western Conference is deep and stacked this season. They need Kyrie Irving to play at a near All-Star level to secure a high playoff seed to make their postseason path easier. Hopefully, the optimism is warranted and the 32-year-old guard will be available when the Mavs reconvene for training camp.
